I have become a fan of Dr. Oz and while watching recently he had a segment dedicated to women about health risks that give us signs of danger, but often go ignored. Subtle little warning signals could change your life if you choose to ignore them. I jotted down some notes and figured I’d share with as many people as possible! Hope you learn something and are blessed by my findings!

1) Exhaustion: Being tired all the time, even after waking up, is never good and is a sign that you are subjected to having a heart attack within the month. Keep an eye on how often you feel exhausted and consult with a doctor about it.

2) Frequent urge to urinate: Is a definite sign of Diabetes. Rather you are drinking a lot of fluids or not, running to the restroom throughout the day and night could be a symptom of diabetes. Diabetics are usually thirsty due to how their body is breaking down sugar, therefore they eliminate quite often. Get a test done to see where you stand with diabetes.

3) Taking all medications in the morning: This simply cannot work with all meds you may be taking because certain meds break down in the body differently and some work best being taken at night before going to sleep. Consult with your doctor on which meds should be taken at night versus in the morning.

4) Unexplained weight gain: Some women naturally put on and lose weight due to emotions or lifestyle change, but unexpected and unexplained weight gain can be a sign of Cancer. Dr. Oz said somehow fluid forming in the tissue can travel down to the rest of the body (namely the stomach) and cause a bloated pouch in your belly. Get a full medical checkup and breast examination to rule out Cancer.

5) Memory Loss: As we get older, it happens; however pay attention to your memory loss pattern and determine if your memory loss is from old age or early signs of Alzheimer’s Disease. Dr. Oz suggested a test for your senses where you blindfold yourself and have someone put known scents in front of your nose (e.g. fruit, flowers, cinnamon). You should get majority of the answers right; if so, probably no need to be weary of Alzheimer’s. To protect your memory Dr. Oz suggested Omega-3 Fat (found in fish), or an Algae supplement.

If you are concerned for your health for any reason, always visit a doctor before trying any Google remedies (I have that bad, lol). The sooner you catch a problem the easier it is to correct it!

Live well!

Be Blessed

November is National Nutrition Month! It is never too late to change your unhealthy habits to healthy eating. The American Heart Association’s website has tons of information to customize your diet and nutritional needs. Some of the suggestions listed are to snack on snacks that are high in protein such as celery and peanut butter. Make sure you eat breakfast. Skipping breakfast could cause you to actually gain weight (no one wants that). When you need a crunch…snack on nuts instead of chips. Nuts such as almonds, walnuts and pecans are all very good for you. Swap fried foods for yummy baked foods. The list could go on and on. The main thing is to start slow and stick to it. Don’t deprive yourself of your favorite food, however eat unhealthy foods in moderation. Hopes this helps…happy eating! Until next time…

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is very dear to me as I have aunts that are breast cancer survivors! The rate that new cases are appearing, it is likely you may know someone affected in your lifetime. Breast Cancer is not cancer only women get, males diagnosed with breast cancer cases are rising. Definition of breast cancer: Cancer that forms in tissues of the breast, usually the ducts (tubes that carry milk to the nipple) and lobules (glands that make milk). It occurs in both men and women, although male breast cancer is rare.
Estimated new cases and deaths from breast cancer in the United States in 2010:

New Cases: 207,090 (female); 1,970 (male)

Deaths: 39,804 (female); 390 (male) information from www.cancer.gov

There are many things you can do to decrease your chances of getting breast cancer; exercise three times a week, eat healthy, give yourself monthly breast self exams, and get mammograms regularly (yearly) by a trained specialist.

You can also help against the fight of breast cancer by donating to different research organizations like Susan G. Komen. If you can’t make an annual walk, try doing something in your community to raise money to be donated. Every little bit helps. Share ways you plan to make a difference. Until next time…

“Breath is the link between the inner and outer worlds.”

– Alice Christensen

We live in very demanding times, and our health depends on our being able to relieve our bodies and minds from constant stress. Breathing with awareness can focus and concentrate our attention inside. This slows down our pace and eases the pressure, anxiety, anticipation and excitement that are common stress reactions. At any time, you can consciously experience your breathing to help you concentrate your mind and relax your body. Compare how you feel after your session with how you felt before. Write about your experience in your journal.

“Controlled deep breathing helps the body to transform the air we breathe into energy. The stream of energized air produced by properly executed and controlled deep breathing produces a current of inner energy which radiates throughout the entire body and can be channeled to the body areas that need it the most, on demand.”

I was visiting one of my favorite “Celebrity & Everything Fabulous” sites (as I call it), Cosmopolitan Chic, and one of the spots was featuring Brandy and it pointed out her non-aging, fabulous, youthful-looking self! I started on a rant and realized I have something to say about this, so to blogging I go! All women, and probably men, (but moreso women), are interested, slightly obsessed, and inclined to aging beautifully and as slowly as possible. There’s a few things that come to mind when I think about remedies and methods to aging slowly and with grace.

1- I’ve known many older women who look great in their 40-something-year-old skin because they were proactive in using anti-aging products. Sounds a little crazy however there’s products out there that’s age-group appropriate. I use the Avon anti-age product and my personal sales rep introduced to me the Anew line. They have products for those in their 20′s, 30′s, 40′s, and above… There’s restorative benefits in each benefit which helps you age well. Check out which one could be the best benefit for you here. (A link to this website is also in the Biz Connections page)

2- The things you eat, drink, and do take a toll on your body or helps improve it. Taking those things into consideration help you age gracefully internally as well as externally. We all want our days to be long, and by treating our body right this can help us. There’s food that help with your skin and body; those types of things can be found at this skin care blog. 5 foods named were spinach, salmon, tomatoes, blueberries, and (ladies will love this) CHOCOLATE!!! YUM! You can also Google more foods that are age-defying. Diet plays a huge role in your outer appearance and internal system.

3- One thing that I didn’t have to Google, and I actually found out, first of all, from my grandmother telling me, and second, I learned just from living and observing people = the life you live determines how you age, and how well you age, with that. When you live a fast life it takes a toll on your body and breaks you down. Lack of sleep of course ages you, and what you put INTO your body, like drugs, alcohol, and other bad habits wears down your body down as well. Your skin loses its natural elasticity and glow; ultimately you look older than what you really are dependent on how you lived/live your life. If you were doing 30-year-old things at the age of 15,then guess what- you look double your age already. I know some people have/had no choice on how they may have started off their life- rather you were a kid that had to grow up fast due to certain circumstances, or got caught up in a wrong lifestyle early on, it’s all understandable. We can all start anew: LIVE. LOVE. LAUGH. Don’t take life so hard… Treat your life & body right; after all, it’s the only one you have!

Can you think of any age-defying tips to share?

Today, December 1, 2009, is Worlds AIDS Day. It was established in 1988 by the World Health Organization. AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and is caused by HIV (Human Immunodificiency Virus). There are a reported 1 million Americans living with AIDS and over 33 million people world wide. African Americans have the highest reported AIDS cases (49% of total reported cases) in the US followed by Hispanics. American Indians and Alaska Natives are tied at number three. There is no cure for HIV and AIDS so remember the ABC’s – Abstinence, Being Faithful, and Condoms! For more information on World AIDS Day and to find testing centers in your area go to www.aids.gov

December is also Seasonal Depressive Awareness Month. Seasonal Affective Disorder (also known as SAD) usually occurs at the same time every year, typically in the fall and winter months. Symptoms include over sleeping, depression, anxiety, social withdrawal, hopelessness, weight gain, and difficulty concentrating. The common cause of SAD is darker days during fall and winter causing the mind to go into a depression. There are no medical tests for SAD however the doctor will ask detailed questions and conduct a physical exam. Making the house or living environment brighter and sunnier, going outside for lunch or throughout the day and exercising are lifestyle changes that can help SAD. For more information on SAD please visit www.mayoclinic.com/health/seasonal-affective-disorder.

Holidays are here and before you run to the kitchen to fix your 10th plate please read!

We typically gain weight in the winter and one of the main reasons is because two of the biggest holidays reside in the winter months: Thanksgiving followed up by Christmas. Time to feast! *rubbing fork and knife together* It’s not too wise to just eat and eat and flop down on the couch though! Well, if you care about your health that is. There’s a few things to know and do as you enjoy your savory & hot homecooked meals.

1) Eat small portions of appetizers. It’s supposed to wet your palette not get you full! Prepare low-fat appetizers too, if possible. Things like veggies, fruit, shrimp cocktail, and hors d’oeuvres (limit to 3) are tasty and light enough to snack on until dinner is ready.

2) If you will be house hopping don’t eat big at every stop. Control your carb intake, sweets intake, and etc. Balance out your meals if you’ll be eating multiple times a day. You can always ask for a to-go plate too so you don’t feel obligated to scarf down everything at once.

3) One of the most important tips I can suggest is stay active. I like to eat and I know sometimes it’s hard to control yourself, but the least you can do is keep it moving. After eating go for a walk with your family; play with the kids (or dogs); have a Wii tournament with the family; or an easy option is to go power shopping the day after- with all the competitiveness that it entails you are sure to bust a sweat!

I’m sure there’s a host of other things you can do (like simply working out), my main point is make health-conscience choices during the holidays while you feast away!

Happy Eating!

Be Blessed
