The Purpose of Our Journey
Have you ever questioned God or became angry with him when life throws you a curve ball? Have you ever just simply asked “Why me?”, well, why not YOU!? The journey we travel is not for us but for those who will be helped by our experiences. As Christians it is our responsibility to go through then reach back and help those going through the same situation.I have a co worker who is a Christian and very involved in her church. She has one child, an 18 year old daughter, who was born mentally retarded. As we were talking one day she told me how she and her husband wanted to have a child more than anything. She ate right, worked out, took her vitamins, never missed a doctor’s appointment, I mean did everything by the book. When her daughter was born she felt like her whole world came to an end. She was angry with God and said she even stopped praying and talking to him because she couldn’t understand how he would allow a child to go through the many procedures to follow. How he could allow a child to be born into a society where kids can be cruel and hateful. One day she said when her daughter was around 3 years old, God told her that this journey is not about her and that the sooner she stops feeling sorry for herself the sooner she will be able to be used as his vessel. She said that was her epiphany (and my ah ha moment as well!). She realized she had to snap out of her pity party and help those in need. Since then she has been an active member in her community working with several organizations for mentally retarded children. She coach and assist parents raising mentally retarded children and offer resources which she has used and found to be helpful. She pray with families and offers to be just a phone call away when life gets to be too much. She said it wasn’t until then she realized that was her purpose in life. That was the cross she had to bear. She went on to say that she realized her having a mentally retarded child had nothing to do with her at all – she had to have her in order to help those who would follow in her situation. The people she was able to introduce to Christ in the process was reward enough she said.
That had me thinking like hmmm of all the stuff I have been through in life, even this year is it simply to help someone as they go through it? I tried to get out of my funk for whatever reason and see if there was a way I can help others and low and behold it was. When you are going through something in life stop and ask yourself and God what is the reason you are going through this. Often times it has nothing to do with us at all, just that fact that God knows we can handle it and has chosen us to bear it. Even if it helps only one person, it wasn’t in vain. As we close 2009 I urge you to review the situations you have been through and ask yourself how the knowledge you have now will be able to help someone in the future. Until next time…
