The Side Effect of Words

Remember that old saying “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”? I know I remember it and now I know that that saying couldn’t be further from the truth! The reality is, words can and do hurt. A verbal altercation can cut deeper than a physical one. Words hold power and emotion. There are side effects to EVERYTHING from medicine to words. In arguments, the minute I hit below the belt, I regret it the millisecond the words leave my mouth and I know I would never be able to retrieve them again. In contrast I have been scorned by words of loved one and friends. Those words hurt to the core. Even though they apologize and I forgive, sometimes its hard to forget. I think in the back of mind did they really mean that or just say it out of anger? Either way it was said, and for a moment they had the power to hurt.

The Bible tells us to “Speak those things as though they were” that alone teaches us words hold power. It instructs us to renounce those words spoken against us and repent for the negative words we speak against others, again because words hold power. With this knowledge the Bibles gives, it is best to speak positive over our lives. Speak positive over the lives of our loves ones and friends. The Secret (best selling book), also touches on this with the law of attraction theory. By speaking and seeking out positive vibes, eventually they will return to our life. The next time you have a conversation with someone (or yourself) choose your words wisely for they hold power be it negative or positive. Know with everything said there is a side effect, shoot for the positive one! Until next time…
