Do You Have A Bucket List?

My co-worker told me she was going to New York City by herself Friday to see Westside Story on Broadway. She went on to say it was something that’s been on her Bucket List for over 20 years. She asked me what was on my bucket list, and for the life of me I couldn’t think of ONE thing! I literally thought for a good 3 minutes and finally said I don’t have anything. She tried to comfort me by saying “It’s okay, it is not something you can think of right now; it is something that will just come to you.” Since she knew I’d written a play and currently working on a book, she asked “Who is your favorite Playwright?” again nothing came to mind. Favorite author? *BLANK STARE* Favorite actor, actress, singer, song, restaurant?? Nope, couldn’t name one! On my ride home my mind was consumed with our conversation. I text 2 friends (Gossiper being one of them) asking if they had bucket lists and favorites. Both said yes! I thought where have I been??? One of my friends said, “Well you have never thought anything was out of your reach so maybe you don’t need a bucket list like others because if you want to do, try, or see something you will just do it. You have been that way since we were kids” however, that comment didn’t sit well with me.

In my soul searching research I know that a bucket list can keep me focused which is something I am ALWAYS working on. Although I have MANY goals and dreams (some simple and realistic like having children or finishing nursing school to others like owning a publishing company and publishing a New York Best seller), it can help me put things into perspective. With every decision made there is an opportunity to capitalize on or become closer to completing an item on the list. The awesome thing is that its YOUR list so it can change over time, have a timeline for certain things, include career things as well as fun adventurous things, its yours! A bucket list is a simple form of a Vision Board. The Bible tells us to “…write the vision and make it plain” and I know of many people who create vision boards too. Some people clip different pictures from magazines of cars, homes, vacation destinations, and even careers they aspire to have and look at the board daily so they can see and remember their ultimate goal. I believe bucket lists and vision boards are very useful, I have even jotted down vision statements in the past. You have to see it before it can become a reality.

Having favorites motivates you to finish your task and push you to be the best. The lyrics to a song say “Bad is when you’re capable of beating the baddest”. When my little brother was younger he looked up to Michael Jordan then Kobe Bryant. He used to play and practice all the time to one day be better than them and become a bad basketball player. Favorites gives you a since of relate – a – bility (I made that word up I’m sure). When you have a favorite song, the lyrics are usually ones you can relate to. The same goes for your other favorites. You may relate to a certain actors upbringing, or an authors genre etc. I think its an advantage to have a bucket lists as well as favorites. It ultimately helps define not only your purpose but also who YOU are and what you like. I was talking to my husband about this subject and he said it’s kind of hard to surprise me or buy me anything because I don’t have favorites so he never know what direction to go in. Do you have favorites? Do you have a bucket list? If not, think of slowly creating one. It is fun and will help define who you are. Until next time…

Be Blessed
