New First Impressions: For the Job!

With the kick off of an AWESOME new website G.O.S.S.I.P. Sister, in a new year, I figured it is only right for me to talk about making a new first impression; with jobs that is. As a corporate America professional working in Human Resources I receive hundreds of resumes a week. Since this is a site designed to help one another I decided to write my first blog on how to make the best first impression with a potential employer.

Years ago it was said that a job interview was the first time you could make a first impression. Today with the rise of computer based application systems, your resume is the actual first impression a potential employer sees. I would like to share a few tips with all the job hunters seeking to obtain their dream job in 2009.

1. Have a simple email address. If you don’t have an email account, get one. If your personal email address does not include your first and last name think about creating one that does. You can call it your professional email account. It is very likely you will receive an email from the potential employer as the first form of communication. You want the employer to be able to read and understand your email address easily, what easier way than your name?

2. Make your resume industry specific. As women we juggle many hats. We may be a dance instructor, administrative assistant, freelance photographer, and part time wedding planner all at the same time. You want to market yourself in the right way. Don’t list all of your different roles on the same resume. Make four resumes, making each specific. One would be for the dance instructor (this resume you would distribute to dance companies) and will list all of the experience you have had with dancing. Another resume would be for the administrative roles you have held. This resume you would market to companies looking for administrative assistants and so forth. You never want the employer to have to guess what position you are applying for or what position you are qualified for.

3. Make your resume as close to one page as possible. If you need to remove any sections, remove hobbies, likes, or/and interest. Try to list objective, education, experience, and skills.

I hope this has helped. Remember you are a child of God, you DESERVE the best. Now go get the dream job God has for you!

Until next time…Be Blessed!
